Polysaccharide Y-1401

Chemical properties

Behavior in solution

Dispersions of the polymer in water or aqueous alcohol are highly viscous and tend to soft gelation. Thixotropic properties has been observed. Aqeous solutions show slight opalescence and have a pH in the range of 6.0-7.0 for concentrations of 0.1-1.5%. Viscosity is dependent on the concentration of the polymer. Modrate decreases in viscosity are caused by potassium chloride, calcium chloride and borax, with decrease beeing more pronounces at lower concentrations of the polymer. The polymer is relatively unaffected by pH at pH 4-11. At pH below 4, viscosity decreases with time, suggesting a certain degree of hydrolysis [1].

Modification

The polymer is easily deacetylated by dilute alkali at pH 11.5 [1].
